Has anybody had an overnight oximetry test done for sleep apnea? I had to get an oximeter from the hospital and wear it overnight (for a minimum of 6 hours) and then bring it back to the hospital the next day. Apparently normal levels are from 96 – 100%. Before I fell asleep, it was varying around an average of 96 -98. But then I fell asleep and woke up halfway thru the night to use the bathroom and noticed it had dropped down to only 82%. Obviously this is significantly below the normal range, but I’m wondering just how serious of a drop this is. Does anyone know anything more about this? Thanks!
Some of the answers from others may be correct, and some incorrect.
The Answer is this:
Although very important for detecting sleep apnea, oximetry is not the ONLY thing necessary to diagnose sleep apnea. There are several things that can cause an oxygen desaturation on oximetry. Sleep apnea is one of them.
A single drop in oxygen by itself is probably not too alarming if it lasts for a few seconds – this could be artifact. However, if it occurs every 30 seconds. This could be very suggestive of sleep apnea. But this could be obstructive or central sleep apnea – totally different beasts.
So, if there is any doubt about the diagnosis, a proper sleep study should be ordered – polysomnography.
To find out more about polysomnography and sleep testing, see the American Sleep Association website.
http://www.sleepassociation.org/
They have good info for the general public on sleep apnea and sleep testing.
Good luck.

Im in high school right now and im going into college for nursing. and im positve thats what i want to do and im almost positive that i want a wrist tattoo. all itll be is either just a type 1 diabetic thing(just say type 1 diabetic in pretty lettering) or a charm bracelet all the way around my wrist with a type 1 diabetic alert charm and then later i would add more charms. but im having doubts now because someone told me that you cant have wrist charms for nursing, but my mom said it would be fine because its a medical alert symbol. but i really want it because i dont want to wear an ugly medical alert bracelet and it would just be easier. oh, and im going to be a pediatric nurse. so are wrist tattoos allowed?
It depends on the specific place where you work. I want to be a nurse as well, and am going to school for it. I work at a doctor’s office now, and he allows tattoos as long as they are tasteful and not too big. And obviously, any non visible ones are allowed. But I also know people that live in different states that have very strict rules to follow about tattoos. I would ask around different hospitals and medical facilites where you intend to work, and also ask various schools that teach for nursing. Get many different opinions before you get something permanent on your body. It just depends on the area that you are working in. Also, if you have one that is visible, and can be seen in an interview and then you get hired, they can’t fire you for having it, just ones that you get after you get hired. Jut an FYI. Hope this helps.

Did anyone have high blood pressure during pregnancy and was everything fine?
I went in to my docs office and they told me it was pretty high..
I bought a home blood pressure monitoring system and sometimes It’s normal, and sometimes it’s high. Just borderline. So i don’t know if I really do have high blood pressure or not..
Im kinda scared, what should I do about this? The doctor who measured my pressure was just my high risk doctor, but i haven’t seen my main doctor. They haven’t called me back.
Help?
Had High BP all through first pregnancy. I did just fine. They did end up inducing me with my first because of a very high reading, but once i laid down and rested it went to normal, and during the birth I had normal to low BP. Baby was fine, I was fine and BP went back to normal after baby. Now with #2 I get a mix of high and low readings. They have not put me back on the high risk list YET, though if I continue to get high readings they will. I am trying to control it with exercise and diet. Though I do have my occasional cup of coffee and some naughty snacks.
They just dont want you to have constant high pressure reading, they then worry about eclampsia and stroke. Thats where the worry comes in. Take it easy, do what you can to reduce it, Reduce stress too thats another reason for High BP. Keep up with your doctors and really monitor it well. You will likely be fine.

I’m a twelve year old girl (Indian). My great-grandmother had type two diabetes, and same with my grandmother and aunt (all on my mom’s side). They all developed it fairly late in life – my aunt was the earliest, at about forty, but my grandmother was about 60 or so. So if type two diabetes is in your genes, is it possible to get type one diabetes?
Type two is adult, and type on is kids, by the way.
I’ve noticed that I’m thirsty a lot…this started happening about 2 weeks ago. But I know that a symptom that goes along with thirst is frequent urination, and that hasn’t been happening to me.
Is there anything I can do to stop it from happening? Exercise a lot, cut back on sugar, etc?
Thanks! And if you need more information, please let me know and i will post!
First of all, you can get either Type 1 or Type 2 at any age, its just very unusual to get Type 2 when you are young, or Type 1 when you are older. I got Type 1 at age 44.
Although there is suspected to be a genetic component in both types, Type I diabetes and Type 2 – are different diseases. Type I is an autoimmune disease – you bodies own immune system attacks the special cells in your pancreas that make insulin and you can no longer make it. With Type 1, You need to inject insulin to live. There is NOTHING you can do to prevent Type 1 diabetes – it either happens or it doesn’t. Type 1 almost always happens very suddenly and the symptoms are unmistakable.
Type 2 is a disease where you become immune to the insulin that you make – its though to relate to a variety of things including diet, exercise and weight. People who are very overweight and who are showing diabetic symptoms can sometimes slow or prevent the onset of the disease by radical changes in diet and lifestyle. Most diabetics you encounter in life will be Type 2 and will have developed it later in life – 80%-90% of diabetics are Type 2.
If you have several Type 2 diabetics in your family, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and weight throughout your life will significantly reduce the chance of you developing it.
Based on what you described, it seem very unlikely that you have diabetes – with Type 1 the symptoms would be much more dramatic. If you are in any doubt, ask to see a doctor and get tested.
