Question about what I should do next?

Okay well I have been having symptoms of T1 and when I was babysitting my neighbor (who has T1) I had to check his blood sugar so I decided to check mine. After I changed the lancet and strip and tested my sugar it was 130. Is that normal for a non diabetic? I was thinking about getting a cheap meter and just recording my readings for a week or so to see if they are high or low and if I should get tested. Whats your opinion?
I hadn’t eaten anything in a while when I took the test. And my mom won’t let me take the actual test from my doctor’s office so I was thinking if I got a cheap meter and tested and if they were high or low I could show my mom and then she might actually take me in. I’m asking if you would suggest me getting the meter or just waiting to see if something happens? Its only $9 so its not like its a huge amount of $$

As far as I know I am not a diabetic, but my mother, grandmother, grandfather and others in my family are. I have yet to go to my Dr. to be tested because I hate needles. No one on her can tell you if you are a diabetic (your reading was normal 180 and up is high) the only ones that can tell you are doctors. I test my blood sugar with my grandma’s meter sometimes, and it all depends on when you ate, did you test before or after, how many hours after or before, what was it you ate. The only way to know is to set up an apt with your doctor and have your blood tested.

I think you can buy meters and lancets but I don’t think you can buy test strips without a prescription from a doctor. And you’re 15 years old, I don’t think you need a parent consent for this kind of test. Doctor patient privilege you can talk to your doctor without your mother in the room. At least where I live my grandma has to have a perscription in order to buy her test strips.

what are some meal plans for a diabetic who won’t eat anything green?

My brother in law is planning to visit us for a week.He will not eat any food the color green and he is a diabetic. Breakfast and Lunch are figured out, it is a week of dinners I am having trouble planning.
I did not know that a diabetic could eat wheat tortillas and wheat pasta or about the yukongold potatoes. Thanks for that.

My best friends husband is diabetic and you can make grilled chicken with yukongold potatoes (its a complex carb potato the only kind of white potatoes that people with DM can have), as well as red sauce (or gravy depending on what area you are from) with wheat pasta, Anything with pasta as long as it is wheat. Um as well as chicken fajitas as long as the tortilla is wheat, my friend’s husband eat fish a lot, pot roast, pretty much any meat is good, wheat pasta with grilled chicken in a Alfredo sauce. which factors influence blood pressure , interms of stroke volume, heart rate and total peripheral resistance?

And SVR + HR does NOT = BP (or MAP). It should be :- SVR / HR = MAP

However, the factors are stress, (because cardiac output varies as stress), heart rate, the compliance of the walls at the root of the aorta, and the ratio of pulse pressure to heart rate, PP/HR.

HR affects pulse-pressure only (not diastolic) and it affects it in two mutually opposing mechanisms. The first is when increasing stress increases CO, and increasing cardiac output involves increasing heart rate, so in this mechanism HR varies directly as pulse pressure.
But in the other mechanism, for any given cardiac output, because CO = HR x SV, and SV = C x PP where C is compliance and PP the pulse pressure, we can write CO = HR x C x PP. From this it can be seen that lowering HR inevitably RAISES pulse pressure. BUT it’s not a simple direct linear relationship now, it’s an inverse (parabolic) one, and hugely more significant than the first one, and is the reason beta-blockers, inappropriately administered, are the cause of so many needless deaths.

The fact that the constant of compliance C is a determinant of pulse pressure PP is of course, self-evidently a factor influencing indicated pulse pressure , and by extension, systolic.

But there is one further factor you might bear in mind which isn’t often considered, and that is the amplification of the peak-to-peak values of the pulse pressure wave as it traverses the large and medium conduit arteries. This is due to resonance, -particularly within the walls of the aorta. While these resonances don’t increase the true pulse pressure at the aortic valve, they do greatly raise the apparent values of the readings taken (say) over the radial or brachial arteries, and so these latter must not be taken as accurate.

Finally, while TPR is one determinant of diastolic pressure, neither SV, nor HR has any bearing on PD, although oddly, compliance C does affect it’s perceived or “indicated ” value, because it takes greater pressure to deform older, stiffer arterial walls and so produce Korotkoff sounds (or restore laminar flow of course, to make them disappear). This is the source of the myth that “Blood pressure increases with age and arteriosclerosis” ; it doesn’t, of course. It merely seems to, – because of the daft way it’s measured!

Question for parents who used a sleep apnea monitor on newborns?

We are supposed to start using a sleep apnea monitor on our son who is just over one week old tonight. There is a history of sleep apnea in my husband’s family. His brother also died of SIDS when he was a few months old. I haven’t noticed any breathing problems with our son, we are just doing this to be safe.

You may want to ask if you can skip using one of those monitors and can use an Angelcare monitor instead. It’s a pad that slips under the crib mattress and detects his breathing and will alert you if he stops–same setup, but can be used longer and he won’t be able to pull off the wires as he gets older. Plus, less likely to get a false alarm. There are other movement/sensor monitors out there, but this was the first brand name to come to mind. It does the same thing but without the annoyances of the wires and patches which can cause skin irritation (I am allergic to them and I don’t have the sensitive skin of a newborn).
