is the Sprague Rappaport stethoscope a good brand?

My daughter joined the local ambulance corp and she wants a different Stethoscope so I am looking for one and want to know if this is a good brand

I saw this question and also wanted to chime in just in case I could help. My uncle is a physician and obviously he needs a stethoscope. He told me that he started using these stethoscope diaphragms to help keep the instrument germ free.

He said he found this site that sold the covers that were naturally resistant to bacteria, which sounds important to me if you use the same stethoscope for multiple patients in one day. I’ll put a link to what I’m talking about in the sources section. My uncle gave them a big thumbs up.

Can the sugar intake from my daily cups of Coffee create a higher risk for Diabetes?

I’ve been drinking large Dunkin’ Doughnuts Iced coffees every morning. I get it regular with milk and sugar. A coworker suggested all the sugar i was consuming could put me at a higher risk for developing Diabetes.. Anyone have any opinions on this? Come on E-Doctors! I have 1 Large iced & 1 large Hot each morning.

While consuming sugar doesn’t directly put you at a higher risk for diabetes, you may be setting yourself up for insulin resistance depending on the type of sugar used in the coffee. The leading researcher in obesity, diabetes, and weight management, Dr. Ann de Wees Allen, has put out some great articles on this very topic.

When is the best time to check blood pressure?

My boyfriend found out last week that he has Type II diabetes. His blood pressure was border line and the doctor told him to monitor it daily and keep a log to show him in a month at his follow up visit. But we have taken it several times at supermarkets and it ranges between 140/112 to 131/103 then we got this home monitor and it was 145-103 yesterday evening then this morning we took it when he first got up and it was 119/87. About 30 minutes later after breakfast it was 143/107. I am totally confused!! Can blood pressure be raised that quickly??? Are there certain times a day you should check it? All of the other readings except the one this morning were in the late afternoon, after working all day (sit down enviroment though) Also how many times a day should it be checked? Thank you.

You can also follow these tips to help ensure accuracy when you measure your blood pressure at home:

Before using a monitor for the first time, have your doctor or nurse check its accuracy against the office model. Also have your doctor or nurse watch how you use the device so that he or she can see if you’re doing it properly.

Take your blood pressure at consistent times, such as in the morning and in the evening.

Use the same arm whenever you take your blood pressure. Note that many digital monitors are meant for use only on the left arm.

Don’t measure your blood pressure immediately after you wake in the morning. Wait an hour or so. If you exercise after waking, take your blood pressure before exercising.

Avoid food, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol for 30 minutes before taking a measurement.

Go to the toilet first. A full bladder can increase blood pressure slightly.

Sit quietly for three to five minutes before taking a measurement.

Sit in a comfortable position with your legs and ankles uncrossed and your back supported against a chair.

Rest your arm, raised to the level of your heart, on a table, desk or chair arm. You may need to place a pillow or cushion under your arm to elevate it high enough.

Don’t talk while taking your blood pressure.

Place the cuff on bare skin, not over clothing. Rolling up a sleeve until it tightens around your arm can result in an inaccurate reading, so you may need to slip your arm out of the sleeve.

Take a repeat reading two to three minutes after the first one to check accuracy.

If your monitor doesn’t automatically log blood pressure readings or heart rates, write them down in your own log.

Take the monitor to your medical office annually to be calibrated. If you drop the device or damage it, take it in to be checked before using it again, as it may no longer work properly.

Your blood pressure at home is usually slightly lower than it is in a medical office, typically by a measurement of about five points. For instance, a reading at home of 135/85 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) is about the same as 140/90 mm Hg at the doctor’s office.

Talk to your doctor about what your home blood pressure goal is. As you have diabetes, you may need a goal lower than that of someone without these conditions.

Blood pressure varies throughout the day, and readings are often a little higher in the morning. But contact your doctor if you have any usual or persistent increases in your blood pressure. Also ask what reading should prompt an immediate call to the medical office. In addition, if your home reading shows that your blood pressure is higher than normal and you experience symptoms such as severe headache, chest pain, numbness or tingling in the face or limbs, contact your medical office immediately or seek emergency treatment.

I’ve got diabetes Type 1 – under good control – but still blurry eyes?

My blood sugars are always around 4-7 (sometimes a little higher but I’m quite newly diagnosed) And before I got diagnosed my eyes were quite blurry, (short sighted) and I was told it would go away once I started taking insulin. It did for a few days, and my sight was perfect, but now its come back again. Any ideas why?

Blurred vision is typically seen when glucose levels are markedly elevated. That may have been your case initially but now your readings are reasonable. You do not say whether your readings are fasting or whether they are post-prandial (after meal). 4 to 7 mmol/L is 72 to 126 mg/dL. The higher numbers would be above the goal for fasting glucose but acceptable for post-prandial glucose. Even if the higher numbers represented fasting readings they would not be high enough to affect vision. It is a reasonable assumption when a diabetic is first diagnosed to attribute their blurred vision to the hyperglycemia. At this point you obviously have another ocular error which may be as simple as a refractive error. Please see your optometrist or your ophthalmologist.

what would i need to do if a type 1 diabetic runs out of insulin?

my best friend is a type 1 diabetic and today during class she told me that she ran out of insulin. i asked her if she needed to go home and i would let the teacher know she had to leave. she said it was ok and she ended up staying in class and then got home and more insulin. but i was really worried and now i need to know what to do and be informed to know how to act in case its a real emergency and she needs medical attention. should i carry certain items like tabs or something. this has never happened before but i want to be prepared in case it happens again. idk i just want to be able to feel like i can help her when she needs it.

In this case running out of insulin isn’t a big deal cause she went home and got more. A real problem would be if she ran out of insulin and was without it for several days.

The first thing you should probably do before you “help” her is ask her if she wants help. As a type 1 diabetic, I would get annoyed very quickly if someone tried to “help” me with my diabetes.

One thing I think you should do (and I think it would be smart to do) is to be aware of the symptoms of low blood sugar. Google the symptoms, but also ask her what her symptoms are because not every diabetic has all the symptoms of low blood sugar when they have a low. Also know what to do in case she passes out from a low blood sugar (call 911, glucagon shot, etc. You could ask her about this too). By the way, don’t be worried about her possibly passing out from a low because it’s not very common. A diabetic can feel the symptoms of a low coming on before they test their blood sugar. I’ve been diabetic for 7 years and have never passed out and have treated all my lows by myself, so do not worry about that.

The tabs you are talking about are used to treat low blood sugars, and insulin lowers blood sugar.
