DIABETIC FRIEND – Where can I find great, SAFE RECIPES for someone with DIABETES?

I posted this question under diseases and health but then realized that I might be more likely to get the answers that I need from a food category. Thanks!

my dad was just diagnosed with diabetes about a year ago, so as a family we have tried some diabetic recipes. a lot of the time though, we can use normal recipes and just change some ingredients so that they are more diabetic friendly – for example using low sodium/healthy request soups for casseroles, using splenda, etc. (however, another thing that helps is that my dad used to be a chef, so he has taught us all how to basically make our own recipes up/substituting ingredients). and then there are some times that we eat sweets/and other foods that are not diabetic friendly, bc the key is to have things in moderation (although my dad is different than your friends husband in the fact that thankfully he is not insulin dependent right now)!

i think that this is a wonderful idea of creating the cookbook for your friend! it will make it really easy for her to pull out the cookbook and find something good and easy that will be safe for her husband! also cute idea about the dog!

i’m Drowning & i need help please i had a Spleen removal (splenectomy) ~5 yrs ago?

ever since i’ve run a low grade fever & my skinny legs went swollen, but now i’m swollen in my hands & legs & feet & can NOT get any relief !! i take 2 lasix a day and they’ve had me on “stronger” water pills but they don’t reduce the water, my feet are swollen & numb, i can’t feel the floor, my xrays & echos are fine, i am diabetic & obese, i’m so miserable my K+ is fine, i have like little water blisters on my fingers & face lately,

If you’re swollen couldn’t that be your lymph system? That’s the obvious thing but i assume your doctors would have thought of it. Don’t be down friend, go do something fun or just go visit the doctor and see if they can’t help you out.

Which recipe do you think is better?

I’m making my mom oatmeal chocolate chip cookies tomorrow for mothers day. She’s diabetic, and I can’t decide which recipe would be a little more healthier.
Which recipe would you suggeest?
1. 1/3 cup margarine, softened
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
3 teaspoons vanilla
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup quick-cooking rolled oats
1/3 cup semisweet chocolate chips
Vegetable cooking spray

The top one has less sugar and less chocolate chips in the recipe. Also if you can get some sugar substitute that would be helpful. If your mom doesn’t like the taste of the suger substitute then you can use half real sugar and half substitute.

Can you get diabetic sores on your your stomach? ?

My mom is 56 and is diabetic. She has sores on her stomach that are the size of a quarter. They look like diabetic foot ulcers but on her stomach. There are four of them that are big and then two smaller ones. She was admitted to the hospital today fro them. Could these be diabetic ulcers? If so what will happen? What can be done for them?

You can get diabetic ulcers anywhere they aren’t limited to the feet & legs also it can be staph boils, my dad has them every couple of months & has to be hospitalized so they can give him some real expensive antibiotics. Its a good thing they put her in the hospital because if the infection gets into her blood stream then there is a huge problem for her & her doctors to get it stopped

Questions I can ask a diabetic? Please help its my homework?

I have to write a magazine article on something you get from bad lifestyle choices for my homework. Im doing diabetes so I thought I would do a interview like a magazine would but what questions would I ask them I need about 5 or more thank you. Also should I interview someone with type 1 or type 2 or does it not make a difference.

They usually come in bracelets and necklaces. It usually has your name on it and your disease or allergy. Some people with diabetes, heart disease etc have those but I received a flier in the mail that says they make those for kids too. My 2.5 yo is allergic to some stuff including some medications so I wander if that would be a smart idea to get him one of those?

yes its important if he/she has any life threatening allergies, even if they are just serious allergies. if your kid is at a sitter or freinds house, or say something(not that it ever will i hope) but say it does, this way the medics, sitters, doctors, nurses who ever can see this bracelet and see what they are allergic to. if its a common allergy you can pick one up at a pharmacy for usually around $5-10 and on the back is listed the allergy or condition.
medical personal are trained to check for thee bracelets, they have saved many lives. other wise say something happens and they need to treat your child and give him a common medicine but he/she reacts…. this way they will know.
