Why is Diabetes so misconstrued by the media – see examples.?
Examples:
Movie Scene – A diabetic horse dropping dead from eating junk food.
Cops TV show scene – A diabetic is going into insulin shock and driving absolutely wreckless. The show moderator says “he should have taken his insulin before getting in the car”
Neverending commercials showing people afraid of blood testing devices, or a new meter coming out or being diagnosed as diabetic and freightened.
Let me set a couple things straight: I can eat as much candy and sugar as I desire. I can eat a whole chocolate cake and follow it with a bag of tootsie rolls, as long as I do enough insulin!
A diabetic reaction (like on cops) requires blood sugar to be raised by eating (or drinking orange jiuce) NOT GIVING MORE INSULIN, that would be a death sentence.
Diabetic meters? Have changed very little since 1981. It’s easier to draw blood and to store information – that’s about it.
Why is the media so clueless about Diabetes?
I know what you mean. I have been diabetic for seven years, and it gets aggravating when people have no clue what they are talking about. People will see me eat a piece of candy and they will freak out, and be like, “why are you eating that, you can’t have that” lol. I take 1 unit of insulin for every 10 carbs, and as long as I apply it, i’ll be fine.
I have diabetes and PCOS. I was put on Metformin which regulates both. I’m having problems with my blood sugar getting too low and have to take a much lower dose of Metformin to keep my sugar from going to low. Now my PCOS is going to get out of control again.
My issue is, the next thing I’ll have to do for my PCOS is take Clomid, which I understand you can only take for 6 months at a time. My husband and I want children, but his attitude is not what it needs to be in my opinion. He thinks it will just magically happen when it is time. He isn’t willing to get serious about the baby making thing. I talk to him and he thinks I’m putting too much preassure on myself and obssessing.
I don’t go overboard and make all kinds of charts and tap him on the shoulder and tell him it’s time to do his business. I just don’t want to go trough 6 months and do everything that I have to do to keep healthy and try to get pregnant when he isn’t willing to be serious. How am I supposed to deal?
Honestly? You both might have to be more flexible in your thinking. You know what? Pregnancy isn’t simple for some couples. There may be a time when you have to chart your cycles and tap him on the shoulder and say “let’s go!”. That doesn’t mean you’re going overboard, it just means you’re doing what you have to do to accomplish your goal.
You’re right, it’s not going to magically happen. It’s going to take a little more effort. I’m wondering if your hubby is more on the fence about it then he’s letting on. When a man wants something…whether it’s a female, a promotion, a new car, or whatever… he is relentless about it. There are men on this message board who write in asking for advice on behalf of their wives or even for their own information. I remember reading a post where a woman said something about her hubby wakes up in the morning and takes her temperature while she’s still half asleep. Mine is right there for just about every OPK and HPT I’ve taken. That’s what it’s about…you’re a team. One can’t want it more than other.
Maybe another talk with him letting him know how serious this is for you and how he needs to get on board. Show him some literature about how getting pregnant doesn’t just magically happen for some couples… especially those with fertility issues like PCOS. He may not completely understand the depth of what you’re dealing with, so try educating him…maybe it will help.

Genetics, behavior and environment
Those are the only three factors. Those three factors pretty much encompass everything.
You can change many aspects of your environment.
You can change/modify your behavior.
You can’t change your genetics.
I’m in a similar situation. I have hypertension and kidney problems. All this started about 3 years ago when I was at the height of my physical fitness. I was doing triathlons, marathons, and other races. My diet was low fat, healthy and full of veggies. But, my relatives have hypertension, and I caught some virus in Hawaii that I’m sure damaged my kidneys(it wasn’t the hypertension). I’m doing fine now, and I haven’t given up on my physical fitness.
Just remember, life isn’t fair. You can do everything right and still get sick. The good thing is you know how to excel. So, you’ll do better than those that fold and trip over all life’s trials.
